Electronic Voting Bill Update November 2007

Dear Voting Activists,

As most of you know, one of the main objections to Rush Holt’s bill was that it still allowed for DRE – Direct Recording Electronic – machines to be used to count our votes. The danger of these is that, even if a paper record is produced, people may not sufficiently check their own vote, so an audit of those would be meaningless.

Today, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), along with Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), introduced a bill that closely mirrors Rush Holt’s bill in terms of the audit provisions, but makes an outright ban against using DRE machines after 2012.

As soon as I have a bill number, I’ll forward so we can contact Boxer and Feinstein re this. Feinstein put forward her own bill, which is dreadful – allows election officials to count votes in secret, does not require paper records, ‘nuff said.

Thanks for all you do. Stay tuned!

"Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. The real extent of this state of misinformation is known only to those who are in situations to confront facts within their knowledge with the lies of the day." - Thomas Jefferson
